THE VESPUCCI FOUNTAIN PEN

SOLID GOLD

amerigo vespucci

The Amerigo Vespucci was built in the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard to a design by Lieutenant Colonel Francesco Rotundi of the naval engineering unit, and although it has a diesel electric engine with a power output of 2000 Hp, its fundamentally a sailing ship, with lines inspired by the nineteenth century vessels, with three masts and a bowsprit, square sails, staysail and jib. It has a displacement of 4,100 tons, an overall length of 101 metres, maximum breadth of 15.5 metres and a sail area of approximately 3,000 square metres. Unmistakable due to the elegant black and white stripes of the keel and the magnificent ochre coloured rigging, with the mainsail towering more than 55 metres high,

Montegrappa 1912 decided to dedicate to this vessel the first fountain pen in its new collection of writing instruments known as 'Le Signore del Mare" (The Ladies of the Sea), which is now being launched on completion of a highly ambitious and committed design study and which, after the Vespucci, will be expanded with the finest and most beautiful sailing ships in the Italian Navy.

ANIMALIA

To create Animalia, Montegrappa employed a special technique: engraving with a burin, which is a small scalpel used by highly specialized craftsmen to cut awa a fine shaving from the metal surface, giving a two-dimensional impression of the image.

This magnificent achievement begins with the artist's design, reduced exactly to the finished size. The design is then transferred onto tracing paper that is fixed onto the smooth body of the pen. The barrel is covered with a thin layer of gesso powder, which receives the lines when the design is traced once more. The craftsman then outlines the design with a metal point to delicately engrave the surface. The final engraving is made with the burin, wielded either by the hand alone or with the aid of a hammer. Finally, details are filled with gold, enhancing the work's value and elegance by providing a contrast between the various elements of the design. With Animalia, Montegrappa has permitted a depth of expression never previously achieved, giving the craftsman the dignity of a sculptor who has created a low-relief image from a decorative element. Animalia is produced in numbered and limited edition of 100 fountain pens in 18K gold (approx the number of endangered animal species in Italy). Each 18K gold nib in the collection is engraved with the design of a tiger, repeating the miracle of an engraving that is remarkably profound and complex, even by the standards of Montegrappa.

Animals depicted are a seagull, Eagle, Horse, Lion and Tiger, Dolphin, and Serpent

HUMAN CIVILIZATION

Montegrappa 2000 Limited Edition

Human Civilization is the second pen in the trilogy that began with Science and Nature and illustrates our view of human history and the context in which it has developed. Human Civilization is produced as a limited and numbered edition

The pen's body is decorated by the technique of low relief engraving that on this pen has reached depths that have never before been reached to allow the application of the enamel. Vitreous enamelling requires the manual application of each colour and each colour utilized has in turn a separate "firing", (the surface honing, the successive polishing and the application of a layer of transparent varnish that requires a further firing) completes this toilsome process, giving life to a work of art that is unique to its kind.

From an original design and sculpture it is endowed with a spring mechanism and is characterized by deep engraving and by an "agate" cabochon that recalls the colour of the pen's resin. The rich central band resumes the design engraved on the clip and through the carved areas one may appreciate the resin's luminosity. The nib, a masterpiece of its kind has been lovingly chiselled with three delicate fleur-de-lys (representing dynastic power and government, a fuller explanation will follow.) It is in 18K gold and partially platinum plated. It boasts an ebonite feeder that guarantees a constant and regular inkflow.

The Box

Manufactured in quality wood and partially lacquered and covered in leather, the packaging of Human Civilization was conceived to be used successively as a pocket emptier (valet). Montegrappa has created a new and exceptional fountain pen, realized with the most precious metals and with the most exclusive techniques, whether one is a collector or not, to hand down to prosperity to celebrate the beginning of the third millennium.
